One Fine Morning at Laurel Falls: Tatum and Antonio's Proposal
Oy! There is a challenge in planning a marriage proposal during the time of COVID. When Antonio first contacted me, it was during the time when the Smokies were still shut down. Thankfully, they reopened but in phased stage, meaning he and I went through several emails of “Okay, so we say this is Plan A . . . but if we can’t access that site, we go to Plan B . . .”: But . . . it has to be “just right,” you know? This is too special a moment to leave it to chance, and Antonio wanted things memorable for his beloved Tatum.
While this is, as I said, a challenge for me I know it can be absolutely nerve wracking to a proposer, but Antonio was a champ. With multiple checks on weather, discussions on the habits of tourists (always a consideration when you want privacy for your proposal), a spot was chose: Laurel Falls. And that meant an early morning call because wait too long and you will be one of many since it is picturesque AND easily accessible.
But fortune smiles on those in love because by the time Antonio and Tatum came strolling up, besides myself there were only four other people there, all of whom knew what was going to happen and who also agreed to jump in front of anyone trying to block the shot. People love to help.
And then this happened . . .
I always get a kick when she realizes there are others watching the two of them and her reaction when I say, “Congratulations, Tatum!”
“Wait! This was all planned?!” Yes, it was - that’s how much he loves you!
I love the moments after as we do a little photoshoot. I get to know the couple and these two are darling. Hailing from Indiana, Tatum is a social worker helping her community while Antonio is finishing up his studies in physical therapy. These are good people!
Oh, and the ring? Magnificent!
What a joy it is for me to be able to capture this moment for these two! I think it is wonderful that their family and friends back in Indiana can see this moment . . . and even more so, there could be a time when a grown man is showing these pictures to his little son, and the boy asks, “Who are these people?” And the father can answer, “That’s the day Grandpa asked Grandma to marry him.” Because a marriage proposal is an important moment in the history of a family.
And now for a little lagniappe . . .
While I don’t always have the circumstances that allow it, when I can I let my “decoy camera” run on video while the proposal is happening. Just a short, little video to showcase their story. Like this one!
And as is my tradition, let me end any proposal story with my usual:Laurel Falls
Mazel tov, you crazy kids!
Wow, what a story for Tatum and Antonio! Are you planning on proposing to your beloved? Give me a shout and let’s see what fun we can dream up!
