I recently found myself in the Florida Keys and after finishing a pet photography session, I was driving down a back road on Geiger Key to return to my hotel. Along the way, I saw a gentleman on his bike, cruising along in a relaxed manner with two Basenjis trotting next to his bike.
I drove past and did an immediate u-turn.
"Excuse me, sir? Are those Basenjis?"
"Yes, they are - meet Yogi and Yoshi!"
"May I photograph them?"
I think their owner expected me to pull out a cellphone and snap a couple of photos from my car. Instead, I got out and the next thing you know, I was lying in the middle of the road.
Yogi and Yoshi's owner truend out to be Captain Lenny, a local fishing guide. I asked him, how did it come about that he had Basenjis, a dog whose breed hails from Africa, where they were bred for hunting.
Captain Lenny laughed. "Because of Thanksgiving!" He explained that one year he and his wife were watching the Macy's Thanksgivign Day parade and kept watching past it - and, as every dog lover knows, it is immediatly followed by the National Dog Show. "My wife saw the Basenjis and told me, 'I want some of them!' So, I got her some!"
Aren't these two gentlemen a delightful pair?
