Nikki and Dan: on the Sacrament of Matrimony
I was honored to be the photographer for the wedding of Nikki and Dan on November 7, 2014.
The couple had their ceremony at Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Chattanooga, TN. This posed a bit of a challenge to me in that I knew the church would be dark, since it was an evening wedding, and no flash would be allowed out of deference to the religious ceremony.
But there was also a different challenge. The couple did not simply have a wedding service. Nikki and Dan are devout in their faith and that meant that they would be conferring on each other the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, one of the seven Sacraments in the Catholic Church. And that meant that as their photographer, I had to capture not simply the standard moments within the event - vows, ring exchange, the kiss - but also the sacredness of what they were doing.
I am fortunate. I have photographed many Catholic ceremonies in my work for the Diocese of Knoxville, as well as other organizations. But just knowing when something will happen and showing it due respect are two different things. A bride and groom of any faith tradition can count on me to learn what makes their marriage ceremony special. Every couple has moments on their wedding day that have significance to them. My work is to capture not simply the moment, but the sense of importance it has to the couple.
